ABOUT DINING ON MAUI
Maui is a world class vacation destination. An important part of any vacation is having the opportunity to eat at a variety of new places.
If you are traveling to Maui on a budget, your choice of restaurants can be challenging. Granted that there are a great many places to eat on the Island. They cover the full spectrum from very “posh” (read, expensive) to the very same fast food restaurants you have on the mainland.
However, in my experience the very nicest places to eat are those restaurants which are frequented by the locals on an every day basis. While I have not visited all of these places, there are a number of restaurants that come to mind when I think about where to eat when visiting Maui.
You can find details of these restaurants in most good guide books, such as “Maui Revealed”, so I won’t go into quoting the menu, other than to mention a couple of dishes that are my favorites.
The most recommended breakfast restaurant on the island is a small place in Wailuku by the name of “The Tasty Crust”. It is easy to find, just ask anyone in Wailuku for directions.
They are most famous for their banana pancakes, but they have a wide variety of typical island breakfast dishes, including “locomoco”. They are open all day and they have a regular menu covering lunch and dinner. The atmosphere is homey and the service is attentive. The patrons are for the most part locals.
My favorite place for lunch is a small local chain of restaurants by the name of “Da Kitchen”. They have locations in Kahului, Kiehi and Lahaina. Again, finding them is simply go to the town and ask anyone for directions. Again, you will find Da Kitchen referenced in all the guide books. They specialize in local favorite dishes, very large portions and friendly, attentive service.
