They say that man’s greatest fear is public speaking and that his second greatest fear is dying.  According to Jerry Seinfield that means that most people at a funeral would rather be in the coffin than give the eulogy.

To my knowledge no one has died from public speaking.  Your hands may sweat, your voice may quiver, your heart may be pounding in your cheeks, and, you may have vomited before going on stage; but rest assured, public speaking will not kill you!

A discussion recently about conducting successful workshops led me to believe that very few people have the answers. It is ironic that the very people who are supposed to have all the answers, people conducting workshops, don’t really know how to capture and captivate an audience. It’s a shame that most people are being attracted to the more alluring and energetic voice, one that may not necessarily have the correct answer.

We’ve seen them on television and businesses hire them as motivational speakers, because that’s really all they do. They transfer their high energy to you and make you want to jump out of your seat and go get something done. But what it is that you want to do, you don’t even know yet. You don’t have the answer to that one. You’re just a ball of energy ready to explode and make things happen, but you don’t have a cause.

If you are anything like me, you’ve read dozens of books and listened to countless programs on public speaking.  One common thread that I tend to find in all the info out there on public speaking, is that “research shows that PUBLIC SPEAKING IS THE #1 FEAR OF MOST PEOPLE.”

Now let me ask you a question: if I (or heck, anyone) held a gun to your head and and said “You’ll need to give a public speech in three months on a topic of your passion or a topic that you know really well.”  What would you say?  My halucination is that you’d NOT say “Go ahead, pull the trigger,” but rather accept the challenge and do that speech.

Let’s set things straight. There is absolutely NO way you can learn how to swim or cook from just reading a book or attending a seminar unless you are a genius. Yes?

And there’s a reason why there are still a gazillion number of people who are not rich in spite of the number of books on how to get rich. Yes?

If you have realized by now, the fastest and most effective way in mastering a skill is by DOING it. As the saying goes:
