Russia has become a popular tourist destination and this will continue as it is now a main target for the low cost airlines.

Bad points may include some of the following. Throughout Russia there is risk of terrorism linked to Chechnya and other extremists from the Northern Caucasuses. These threats include bombings, hostage taking and suicide attacks in public places. Moscow is often a primary target. Recently a passenger train from Chechnya to Moscow was derailed by an explosion, a bomb was left on the metro in Moscow, another blew up at a Moscow bus stop and two Russian airliners on internal flights were destroyed by suicide bombers. In the past Moscow has seen other terrorist acts on metro trains, in a hotel, market and a theatre.

St Petersburg and Moscow have pick pockets and muggers especially in and near railway stations. These may involve children and women. Theft from hotel rooms and cars is a problem. Beware of strangers in bars and night clubs who may spike your drinks in order to rob you. Several tourists have been held up at knife point in St Petersburg and robbed on public transport. Bogus police officers operate in both cities. Racist attacks may also occur by skinheads on Asians and Afro Caribbeans.

Zimbabwe is a landlocked country at the base of the African continent. Its neighbours are Mozambique to the east, South Africa and Botswana to the south and west and Zambia to the north. It lies on a high plateau, and its terrain consists primarily of grasslands bordered on the east by mountains.

A tourist destination is once again increasing in popularity with lots of overseas tourists as well as thousands of African tourists flocking there each year. Its a very popular stop off point for over Landers doing trips through Africa in safari type trucks. The capital, Harare, is modern, bright and bustling, but my favourite city is Bulawayo, where the people are particularly friendly and the atmosphere is typically laid back African.

Examining the potential for tourism or exploring areas of economic growth, Panama is seeking a design for the future. It has one of the most developed infrastructure facilities in Latin America. This is mainly due to the presence of the Panama canal and two busy ports that have grown along side the canal – the Balboa on the Pacific and the Cristobal on the Atlantic.

The Panama Canal actually needs nature around it, to serve as water catchments, so there are many excellent places to enjoy nature in and around Panama City. Along the west side of the canal you will find the Parque Nacional Soberania, and nearby is the amazing Summit botanical gardens and zoo.

Rome was founded as far back 753 BC by the twins, Romulus and Remus. It grew substantially until it became the Roman Empire which was ruled by an Emperor from the year 27 BC.

The Roman Empire became a political and economic center for the Western World. Its influence stretched far and wide and it was said that “all roads lead to Rome.” This most powerful Empire, however, fell in 476 AD. It had a bumpy history following its fall. The city retained its status as the capital of the Papal States and later on it became a center of culture and artistic activity which it has somewhat retained to this day.

Over its turbulent history, the population in the area has risen and fallen depending on the trend of the time. In modern times, Rome seems to once again be on an upward climb in terms of its permanent population.
